“WOMAN AND APPLE” interview with ERCUMENT TARHAN

Q-Before we talk about the place of art in your life, can you tell us about the significance of poetry in your life?
A-It is poetry which enables an encounter with the reality of the fruits of loneliness, and transcends the boundaries of daily life. If a line of poetry stays with me for weeks, and even a word becomes the starting point of a painting, it should be very meaningful.

Q-When did you start writing poetry?
A-“Gah u Arzu, Gah-ü Kamber, Gah-u Mecnun, Gah-u Leyla”,
Yes, I should have started with folk stories, mythical stories and folk poetry.

Q-Art lovers or artist themselves, how should their relationship with poetry?
A-Just as their relationship to reality or to life. Even if language (of expression) is different, the source(of inspiration) shouldn’t have any bounds.

Q-The present exhibition is especially interesting for it is intensely based on poetry. What are some factors that have led you to this exhibition?
A-Probably it is the fact that I am a good reader of poetry. Or perhaps because I think of art as poetry. Or because human nature is an endless poem.

Q-We see artists and poets in different lobies, they rarely come into the same picture. It seems they don’t follow each other well. What is your opinion?
A-Yes. Why should the other try to walk on the sea with the feet of one, which are good for climbing.
